Amar Chitra Katha: Ultimate Collection

With great excitement... and after years of wanting to do it... I finally ordered myself an Amar Chitra Katha Ultimate Collection. Yes!!! That means 315 titles plus 10 special issues. You can see the list of titles below. As I type this post, the comic books — all 33 pounds of them — are on their way from Mumbai, India, to Timberlake, NC USA.

Even better... thanks to the great support of Stacy Zemke in the University of Oklahoma Libraries, there will also be a collection on reserve in Bizzell Library so that students in my classes will be able to read ACK comics for my Indian Epics class!

And that is the reason for this blog: I need an online space where I can prepare the Reading Guides to go with the books. I want to collect links to Wikipedia articles and other online resources, images, videos, anything I can find to supplement the book and help connect one story to another. Slowly but surely I will make my way through the comic books, starting with the ones most relevant to my classes. I am so pleased to be able to offer this reading option to my students, along with all the other online resources we will be using. For the other Reading Guides and class resources, see this blog: Indian Epics Resources.

Update: The package arrived! Here they are on my bookshelf, minus the 3-volume Mahabharata (gorgeous) and the hardcover Bhagavatam:

  2. I'm pleased to stumble upon this post , while trying to decide if I should treat myself to the same collection. It's the sheer volume that puts me off at present. I'm curious about the feedback you get from your students, as well as how these comics became part of a course.
    Kind Regards

    1. It is the most splendid treat possible, truly! And it has made a big difference for my class, especially for students who are intimidated by the epics we read in book form. Some of my students with Indian heritage have grown up with the comic books, so they are glad to have a chance to read them again, but most of my students have no previous knowledge of India at all, which means the comic books are the perfect way to start.
